Threesomes are a fantasy most people have.
As sexual psychologist Dr. Justin Lehmiller pointed out in his book, Tell Me What You Want: The Science of Sexual Desire and How it Can Help You Improve Your Sex Life, multipartner sex fantasies are the most popular fantasy Americans have.
His research showed that only 5% of men and 13% of women had never fantasized about a threesome.
His research showed that fantasies about threesomes aren’t so much about who is involved but what activities we can engage in with more than one person in our bed.
When many people fantasize about multipartner sex, they get lost in a dazzling spectacle of visualized body parts and imagined sensations that wouldn’t be possible with just two people.
In Dr. Lehmiller’s studies, research that included thousands of people, he found that even women tended not to emphasize who they were doing, caring much more for how they were doing it instead.
Some women even reported having sex with “random dudes” in their fantasies.
As long as two dicks are involved, these women are happy to get lost in their fantasies.
What is Double Penetration?
Chances are you’ve at least seen double penetration in one porn movie. At this point, it’s ubiquitous throughout the porn world, especially in the porn produced by big-budget studios.
The term “double penetration” has morphed over the years, from the “classic” double penetration, where a woman is penetrated anally and vaginally by two male penises simultaneously, to encompassing any act where one or more holes are penetrated simultaneously (with any object).
Sometimes it’s a penis in the mouth and one in the vagina of a woman. Sometimes it’s two penises in the anus of a man. Sometimes it’s a penis in the vagina and a finger/sex toy/fresh vegetable in the anus.
Any combination of things technically constitutes double penetration, though we’ll stick with the classic definition of a penis in the vagina and a penis in the anus for this article.
While the historic roots of the first DP are hard to pin down, it most certainly started with pornography. The first time double penetration scenes were filmed in pornography was in the late 1960s or the early 1970s.
An exhaustive search of books and internet sites revealed scant clues as to where the DP originated.
How Popular is Double Penetration?
Dr. Lehmiller concluded that an astonishing 60% of the participants in his study had fantasized about double penetration at least once. That’s a lot more popular than I would have guessed.
But of the 60% of people who’ve fantasized about DP, only 22% reported regularly fantasizing about it, meaning for most people, it’s a once-in-a-while fantasy at best.
Still, that means 1 out of every 5 people regularly have DP fantasies.
That’s a lot of people.
On his website, sexandpsychology.com, Dr. Lehmiller breaks down the frequency of the fantasy by gender and sexual orientation:
45% of heterosexual women reported having had the fantasy, with 13% fantasizing about it often
56% of heterosexual men reported having had the fantasy, with 18% fantasizing about it often
61% of lesbian and bisexual women reported having had the fantasy, with 24% fantasizing about it often
75% of gay and bisexual men reported having had the fantasy, with 33% fantasizing about it often
64% of trans and nonbinary persons reported having had the fantasy, with 26% fantasizing about it often
One survey found about 9% of the people questioned had tried double penetration.
However, it’s important to note that the study didn’t distinguish between the “classic” (penis-vagina-penis-anus) definition and the modern one (any object, any orifice).
