Does Penis Size Really Matter? Here's What Science Has to Say.
Intriguing studies ask questions about penis size and our preferences
The penis might be the body part that’s inspired more artists than any other. Whether it’s ancient phallic sculptures, masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David, or just a cartoon penis drawn inside the stall of the gas station bathroom with a Sharpie, penises have been an object of reverence for humanity for eons.
But with that appreciation comes a dark side.
Like height, money, and social status, penis size has become a measure of a man for some people—and the source of much male insecurity.
The penis size debate has been around since I was a child.
On one side are the stone-cold pragmatists who thought that a larger penis equated to more friction and thus more pleasure. On the other side are the warm-blooded empaths who feel that sex isn’t about mechanics alone and that things like connection matter significantly more than physics.
Everyone feels like their answer is the correct answer, and many have taken the liberty to speak for everyone else.
What’s been lost in the debate is the science and any potential answer to the question: does penis size really matter?
Penis Size: an Overview
Humans come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some men are 4’11” (150 cm), and some men are 7’7” tall (231 cm). And our penis sizes vary drastically, too.
A 2013 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine wanted to see how guys measured up.
They recruited 1,661 men and measured the size of their wieners. To keep the guys from lying, they promised them condoms. If the guys lied, the condoms wouldn’t fit.
The average size was 5.56 inches (14.12 cm) long and 4.81” (12.23 cm) in circumference.
What’s astonishing is the sheer variety in size uncovered by the study. A 7’7” (231 cm) man is a little under twice as tall as someone 4’11” (150 cm). And those are the extremes.
But some penises were almost ten times larger than other penises in inches.
When it comes to length, the shortest penis was 1.6 inches (4.06 cm) long, while the largest was 10.2 inches (25.91 centimeters) long.
