Happy Holidays!
If you’re anywhere in North America, it’s deathly cold right now. It’s in the 20s here in Florida, which is highly unusual, to say the least. Nonetheless, I hope your holidays are going well, and they’re everything you’ve hoped for.
I injured my back and shoulder quite severely a couple of months ago. I went to the orthopedic surgeon, and he took an x-ray. It turns out I severely damaged three vertebrae. This has made even ordinary chores a pain. Typing for long periods is not only extremely painful but often impossible. Considering it’s a back injury and how much I’m dying to get back in the gym, I decided to see if I could manage bench presses. I started small, with 5-pound weights. Usually, I can bench 145.
I extended my arms, and while I didn’t experience much pain, my left arm couldn’t complete a single repetition of 5 pounds. I could’ve benched that 5 lb as an eight-year-old.
I’ll get an MRI after the holidays to see what’s going on in greater detail.
I feel it’s unfair to my audience to continue to charge you when I’m not at my peak.
This unforeseeable injury has set my plans back for The Science of Sex, so I’ve halted payments until February 1st. You won’t be charged for this Substack during this period, but feel free to browse any content you’d like.
This wasn’t an easy decision, but what I assumed would be a month-long injury at most has turned into an unrelenting pest, and I wanted to be as fair as possible to my subscribers.
If you’d like to help support the medical costs and my long road to recovery, you can donate to my Ko-Fi here.
I come up with my content months in advance, so I have countless ideas and tons of interesting research waiting to be written, it’s just that writing it is so painfully difficult at this point.
The Science of Sex isn’t going away, and I’ll continue to publish free content. But something doesn’t feel right about charging my audience for my work when I’m not 100% and won’t be for the foreseeable future.
Your subscriptions will resume normally on February 1st. This includes annual subscriptions. If you paid for a year, as many of you have, this time will not count against your yearly subscription, which will resume on February 1st.
Hopefully that gives me enough time to get this sorted.
Reach out to me and let me know if you have any questions, and again, happy holidays.
Stay kinky, friends,
Joe Duncan
Sending all the healing energy I can! Love what you do. You’ll be back at it.
A car hit me in 2013 and threw me into a coma. When I came to it, I had full facial reconstructive surgery and a brain injury.
Doctors said I’d never return to teaching preschool but here I am back in the classroom.
You got this. We’re all in your corner. Keep going. ✨💚
I wish you well Joe, and a speedy and enjoyable recovery.
